NBA and NHL Playoffs gave us Game 7s, Kentucky Derby and F1 Miami...

Happy Monday! Sports fans were given everything they could have asked for this weekend, unless you live in Orlando, Toronto or Vegas. The NBA and NHL Playoffs graced us a weekend slate of Game 7 action and we salute the survivors. There was a beautiful photo finish at Churchill Downs Saturday evening in The Run for the Roses. Speaking of red-carpet sporting events, F1 took over Miami on Sunday afternoon in a race won by a first time Grand Prix winner. The PGA Tour also had a first-time winner. The Tom Brady Roast on Netflix was pure comedy.

WTF Stat: $210,700,00 was bet on the Kentucky Derby this year, a new record.

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

Eastern Conference - Round 1

  • Boston Bruins 2, Toronto Maple Leafs 1 (BOS wins series 4-3): Willy Nylander scored the game’s first goal nine minutes into the third period and all the air was sucked out of TD Garden, but Hampus Lindholm responded just 81 seconds later putting one top shelf and it was enough to force OT. The Bruins top scorer David Pastrnak, who was called out to “step it up” by coach Jim Montgomery after Game 6, netted the overtime winner off a beautiful pass from Lindholm to eliminate the Maple Leafs for the third time in seven years - Bruins avoided becoming the first team in any major sport (NHL, NBA and MLB) to blow 3-1 leads in a playoff series in back-to-back seasons

Eastern Conference - Round 1

  • New York Rangers 4, Carolina Hurricanes 3 (NYR leads series 1-0): Mika Zibanejad scored twice in front of the home crowd Sunday to take an early lead at MSG and ultimately Game 1 as the Hurricanes two third period goals were too little too late - Igor Shesterkin become the third goalie in Rangers history to start the playoffs with five straight wins

  • Game 1 | Boston Bruins @ Florida Panthers Tonight, 8:00pm ET ESPN

Western Conference - Round 1

  • Dallas Stars 2, Vegas Golden Knights 1 (DAL wins series 4-3): A Wyatt Johnston goal for Dallas in the first period and a Brett Howden goal for Vegas in the second had this Game 7 tied up going into the third period. Didn’t last for long as Radak Faska was the hero for Dallas scoring 44 seconds into the third period, which was enough to hang on and move onto Round 2 - coach Peter DeBoer is now 8-0 in Game 7s and you can see my interview from last season with him

  • Vancouver Canucks 1, Nashville Predators 0 (VAN wins series 4-2): Arturs Silovs made 28 saves and shutout the Preds on their home ice to send them home packing as a Pius Suter goal with under two minutes left in the game was all Vancouver needed to advance to Round 2

Western Conference - Semifinals

  • Game 1 | Colorado Avalanche @ Dallas Stars Tuesday, TBD

  • Game 1 | Edmonton Oilers @ Vancouver Canucks Tuesday, TBD

NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference - Round 1

  • Cleveland Cavaliers 106, Orlando Magic 94 (CLE wins series 4-3): The Cavs were down 18 in front of their home crowd in the first half of this Game 7, then Donovan Mitchell (39 PTS, 9 REB, 5 AST) erupted for 24 second half points stating “he didn’t want to go home” as the Cavs advance to Round 2 despite a valiant effort from a young Orlando squad that included 38 points from Paulo Banchero - Cavs earn a date with the No. 1 seeded Celtics

Eastern Conference - Semifinals

  • Game 1 | Indiana Pacers @ New York Knicks Tonight, 7:30pm ET, TNT

  • Game 1 | Cleveland Cavaliers @ Boston Celtics Tuesday, 7:00pm ET, TNT

Western Conference - Round 1

  • Dallas Mavericks 114, LA Clippers 101 (DAL wins series 4-2): Kyrie Irving (30 PTS, 4 AST) scored 28 of his points in the second half and has become the non-distracting superstar Dallas had hoped pushing them over the higher seeded, injured Clippers - Kawhi did not play the last two games of the series

Western Conference - Semifinals

  • Minnesota Timberwolves 106, Denver Nuggets 99 (MIN leads series 1-0): The T-Wolves started Game 1 hot and weathered a comeback attempt from the Nuggets behind Anthony Edwards (43 PTS, 7 REB) and unlikely hero Naz Reid’s 14 points in the 4th quarter to grab a road W to start the series and swing home court to themselves

  • Game 1 | Dallas Mavericks @ Oklahoma City Thunder Tuesday, 9:30pm ET TNT
